  15. This free software is written in Bourne shell scripts and all 
  16. source code is included. It should run on any UNIX system 
  17. which supports the Bourne Shell. In addition to using the
  18. GLS for bookkeeping, the software is an excellent source
  19. of examples of Bourne Shell programs for educational use.

  21. We are making this software available for two reasons:
  22. 1) At this time of the year, people often need to get 
  23. their financial affairs in order;
  24. 2) There are few professionally written shell script
  25. applications available for people to review.

  27. The General Ledger System (GLS) is a complete general 
  28. ledger system for use on the UNIX System by small businesses. 
  29. The GLS includes standard accounting features such as 
  30. account transaction entry, deletion and modification, chart 
  31. of accounts maintenance, trial balance, income statement, 
  32. balance sheets, a custom report formatter,and other functions
  33. necessary to maintain a general ledger accounting system.
